memory holds silence
the remembrance of the future, the promise
what promise? that you now come
in touch with the edge of your voice
and escapes you as the wind caresses
the darkness in the voice memory
in dim light a memory in the future

This is what Prospero, the protagonist of “Un Re In Ascolto”, a musical action by Luciano Berio to a text by Italo Calvino, says before dying. It is precisely to this late friend that Berio himself dedicates his cycle of lessons at Harvard University, entitled "Remembering The Future", a non-literal translation which adds a further nuance to the already enigmatic "A Memory to the Future". Remembering The Future is an idea. A concept.
The idea of manipulating musical material from the past with an eye to the future. This artistic approach translates into a real method of creation and production.
The game of reflections, the continuous interaction between past and present, is the sign that distinguishes this "journey" in the "Folk Songs".
The result is a complex but very lean work, the instrumental ensemble is composed of analogic synthesizers, computers "played" with the help of modern controllers, percussion played, filtered and performed live and of course the voice, also in some points treated digitally. The musical performance merges with the Videoscapes, "video landscapes" with dreamlike and strongly symbolic features, where a multiplicity of signs and worlds meet, taking their cue from the suggestions of Folk Songs, arrive in “another” reality. Forgotten worlds, timeless archetypes which great masters such as Vittorio De Seta and Jan Švankmajer have imagined and described.
